Jesus, I Thank You

I’ve written a lot of songs in my life but not many in Christianese. I grew up on my share of worship songs at church and deeply love many but haven’t been so inclined to write one myself. I don’t believe Christian writers are meant to only write about Jesus. If that’s what you do, great, so be it. But I would like to think that everything I make is a reflection of being made in the image of God regardless of it being explicitly stated or not. My task, as I understand it, is to be a good writer whatever I’m writing. Anyway, this song is in response to meditating on Psalms 8, 9 and 10 and this past year being part of Maker’s Collective. It’s been such a joy and support for me.

I appreciate the editors of the Psalms and how they placed Psalm 8 before Psalm 9 and Psalm 9 before Psalm 10. It feels to me like a journey of faith or the maturing struggle of faith. This short screenplay was also inspired by a few situations in the NBA this season, particularly Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers. He recently got traded to Brooklyn. I hope it all works out. Raptors are still in it to make the post season.
